An Ongoing Project

Into the Schools

“Speak What Must Be Spoken” as a physical exhibit was first installed in Atlanta’s Martin Luther King Jr. Middle School in fall 2018.  It moved to Drew Charter School in fall 2019.  In each school, the Emory Libraries team worked with educators to foster classroom programs with local artists and encourage student projects and performances in response to the exhibition.

This website attempts to incorporate many of the same resources and make them available to other educators and students in a virtual format.

Curator’s Tour

“Still Raising Hell”

“Speak What Must Be Spoken:  Art, Archives, and Activism” is the culmination of projects initiated in 2016 around the theme of Black art and activism by Pellom McDaniels III (1968-2020), Rose Library’s curator of African American collections.

McDaniels curated “Still Raising Hell: The Art, Activism, and Archives of Camille Billops and James V. Hatch,” a major exhibition in the Emory Libraries main gallery during 2016-2017.  McDaniels led a tour of that exhibition that was recorded and is shared here in full.

Excerpts of the tour will also be found on this site with related sections of the exhibit.
