In this way, this piece engages the audience in a symbol of Black womanhood and girlhood. The outside of the bonnet is covered in chain link to represent the concept of silent strength that is passed one from one generation to the next. The weight of the chain link also symbolizes the weight of armor that many Black women wear as they navigate the world. Despite the armor, the piece can be touched at any time representing the ubiquitous nature of violence against Black women. The studded band represents the many silent sacrifices that Black women have and continue to make even at the expense of their own health. The inside of the bonnet is plush, soft, and warm representing resilience, love, and faith.

[/vc_column_text][vc_row_inner gap=”35″][vc_column_inner][vc_column_text]

How does this piece or others engage us in a larger conversation surrounding respectability politics?

For more about the project, including this piece click here

[/vc_column_text][/vc_column_inner][/vc_row_inner][vc_row_inner][vc_column_inner][vc_column_text]

For more information about theEmory Arts and Social Justice Fellows Program click here

[/vc_column_text][/vc_column_inner][/vc_row_inner][/vc_column][/vc_row]

[vc_row curly_padding=”content-padding” css=”.vc_custom_1661356613055{padding-bottom: 0px !important;}”][vc_column][vc_single_image image=”2673″ img_size=”medium” alignment=”center” css_animation=”rollIn”][vc_column_text] Unprotected Strength: Bound, Free, and Last [/vc_column_text][/vc_column][vc_column width=”1/3″][vc_single_image image=”3834″ img_size=”large” style=”xtd-shadow–normal-light” el_class=”xtd-offset-frame”][vc_column_text] Emory Arts and Social Justice Fellows Program   Unprotected Strength: Bound, Free, and Last, 2021 Chainmail, stainless steel studs, velvet, and faux leather Artist Fellow: Stephanie Brown Student + Researcher: Octavia Vogel, PhD Candidate, Nell Hodgson Woodruff School of Nursing […]

["post-3014","page","type-page","status-publish","hentry
["GET
