These photographs, along with written narratives and visual materials from Rose Library’s book and manuscript collections, supply critical counter-narratives to the well-known “mammy” stereotype and emphasize the undeniable humanity of each of the individuals shown. By looking at these portraits closely, we can tease out new insights into what is, perhaps, the most complex inter-racial relationship in American life.

Curated by Dr. Kimberly Wallace-Sanders[/vc_column_text][vc_row_inner][vc_column_inner width=”1/3″][vc_facebook type=”button_count” css_animation=”bounceInLeft”][/vc_column_inner][/vc_row_inner][/vc_column][vc_column width=”1/2″ offset=”vc_col-sm-offset-1″][vc_single_image image=”1054″ img_size=”full” add_caption=”yes” style=”xtd-shadow–large-normal” onclick=”link_image” el_class=”xtd-offset-frame xtd-margin–bottom-3″ css=”.vc_custom_1616697124573{margin-right: 4rem !important;}”][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_empty_space height=”75px”][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row gap=”35″ css=”.vc_custom_1586459282242{margin-top: 2rem !important;margin-bottom: 6rem !important;border-top-width: 1rem !important;border-right-width: 1rem !important;border-bottom-width: 1rem !important;border-left-width: 1rem !important;border-left-color: #f5f0e5 !important;border-left-style: solid !important;border-right-color: #f5f0e5 !important;border-right-style: solid !important;border-top-color: #f5f0e5 !important;border-top-style: solid !important;border-bottom-color: #f5f0e5 !important;border-bottom-style: solid !important;}” el_id=”single-event” curly_section_title=”Interview” curly_section_color=”#b5b5b5″][vc_column width=”5/12″ offset=”vc_col-sm-offset-1″][vc_video link=”https://vimeo.com/341822468″][/vc_column][vc_column width=”1/3″ offset=”vc_col-sm-offset-1″][vc_column_text]

DR.
